Business Structure and Law

Business Structure and Law

I’m thrilled to share I’ve achieved a distinction in Pitman’s Introduction to Business Structure and Law course. As an Executive PA, this expertise is an essential toolkit that empowers me to support, advise, and safeguard the businesses I serve.

Importance of Business Law for Executive PAs

Understanding corporate governance and legal requirements is crucial for those managing AGMs, annual accounts, and bank mandates. Furthermore, by mastering business structure and law, Executive PAs and finance professionals can:

  • Ensure regulatory compliance through accurate meeting notices and timely filings (see Companies Act 2006 for UK requirements: legislation.gov.uk/companies-act-2006)
  • Advise stakeholders on duties and procedural formalities for shareholders, directors, and company secretaries
  • Streamline corporate reporting by preparing detailed board packs, EGMs, and loan agreements
  • Mitigate risks by identifying pitfalls around insolvency, health & safety, and employment law (Health & Safety at Work Act: hse.gov.uk/legislation)

Key Lessons and New Skills Acquired

Lesson 1: Exploring Entity Types & Governance Structures
In this lesson, I examined sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, and LLPs. Moreover, I defined key terms such as Annual General Meetings (AGMs) and Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs). Additionally, I clarified the roles of shareholders, directors, and the company secretary to ensure clear governance protocols.

Lesson 2: Corporate Reporting, Contracts and Financial Management
Next, I mastered the filing deadlines under UK law and delved into audits, business contracts, and best practices for loan documentation. Consequently, I can now set up and manage company bank accounts with full understanding of security interests and reporting requirements.

Lesson 3: Taxation, Insolvency Procedures & Employment Obligations
Finally, I compared tax regimes—corporation tax, self‑assessment, and VAT—while learning insolvency protocols and employer duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act. Therefore, I gained clarity on drafting compliant employment contracts and safeguarding both employers and employees.

Putting My Learning into Practice

With this qualification, I can confidently prepare and file accounts, draft compliant board and AGM minutes, and liaise effectively with accountants and legal advisors. Additionally, I’m now able to recommend the most suitable business vehicle for clients, ensuring they meet all legal obligations and avoid penalties.

Next Steps in Professional Development

Looking ahead, I’m gearing up to deepen my technical skills with Pitman’s Microsoft Teams and SharePoint courses. These will further enhance my ability to support collaboration, streamline document management, and ultimately empower the businesses I assist.
